In the News Health Care Reform in U.S.
Since complex legislation requiring an oversimplified yes-or-no vote does not lend itself well to the standard of consistency, Consistent Life does not have a formal position on the recent reform bill as a whole. We appreciate the efforts of those who worked so hard to advance the principle that killing unborn children is not health care. There are differences in perspective on how well that principle was honored in the result. There are also differences among social-justice activists on the merits of other provisions concerning mandates to buy from profit-making insurance companies. We re-iterate our Mission Statement to call on all to maintain a cooperative spirit of peace, reconciliation, and respect for each other as we continue to work for legislative improvements and to overcome litigation obstacles in putting more life-affirming principles into our institutions - including truly universal health care that benefits everyone, particularly the most vulnerable.

Delving Deeper Abortion and Poverty
The connection between the structural violence of poverty and the direct violence of abortion is fairly easy to make since material deprivation is among the more cruel pressures to abort. Yet this connection does not just go one way. There is good evidence that abortion causes poverty most especially, it exacerbates the feminization of poverty. It may not be coincidental that the U.S. has seen an upsurge of this in the decades since Roe v. Wade. Since Medicaid funding is part of this dynamic, it helps us to be familiar with this when discussing the currently newsworthy ban on tax funding of abortion.

Sharing the Message Many Languages
We have a set of short articles that are designed to educate world-wide audiences on various aspects of the consistent life ethic. The French ones are complete; link below. Other languages are still being worked on, and we would love to be able to share with people in as many languages as we have eager volunteer translators for. The articles go up one at a time as they are finished. If you like to translate or know some other sympathizer than might want to help, please send word to

Quotation of the Week

Hubert H. Humphrey
Speech, November 4, 1977

the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.
