Peace & Life Connections #12 - June 4, 2010

In the News – The Freedom Flotilla

Mairead Corrigan-Maguire, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and endorser of our Consistent Life Mission statement, is participating in the nonviolent campaign called the Freedom Flotilla. This made headlines when some of the boats were attacked by the Israeli Defense Forces last week, with 9 people killed. The boat she is on, the MV Rachel Corrie, is part of a second set that will be bringing humanitarian aid in defiance of the military blockade.

Delving Deeper – Domestic Violence and Abortion

Subscriber Jen Roth brings to our attention a May 24 article in The Nation, a magazine which has an abortion-defending position. Nevertheless, the recent article gives insight into how male domination in relationships can sabotage a woman's pregnancy-prevention efforts, sometimes leading her to seek abortion and at other times coercing her into an abortion as a part of the man's sense of control. Pro-life feminists have long pointed to this problem, so it's heartening to see knowledge in the area becoming better developed. The online article has an opportunity for making comments; the first few are rather startling in their insensitivity, and cogent remarks from our point of view would probably be more helpful.

Participation – Books in Libraries

By looking at WorldCat, you can tell if your local libraries have our anthology: Consistently Opposing Killing: From Abortion to Assisted Suicide, the Death Penalty, and War. There are 346 in libraries world-wide. Surely we can do better than that – it's published by Praeger (imprint of Greenwood), a reputable publisher, in hardcover. If your libraries don't yet have it, many public libraries will take patron suggestions and college libraries will take faculty suggestions. They're more likely to get the book with several people suggesting, so perhaps you can recruit friends to do this as well.

Stay tuned – the lower-priced paperback version of this book is currently in the works and is expected out in a matter of weeks.

Quotation of the Week

Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life

“Peace is more than the absence of war. The foundation of peace is justice, that everyone's rights are protected and everyone's dignity is recognized. . . . To fight abortion, therefore, is one of the ways that we work for peace. Abortion completely oppresses and diminishes the rights of the child who is killed. Rather than fostering right relationships, it destroys them, starting with the most basic relationship between a mother and her own child.”
