In the News – The Flotilla Saga Continues

Mairead Corrigan Maguire As Mairead Corrigan Maguire, an endorser of the Consistent Life Mission statement, is in the news for being on the ship MV Rachel Corrie, defying the brutal blockade of Gaza, the Belfast Telegraph of her native Ireland offers a great profile of her. The article also mentions Pax Christi, which is a CL member group.

The State of US State Legislation

Subscriber Edward Chow brings to our attention a New York Times article on how United States state legislatures have had a flurry of anti-abortion legislation this past year – the pro-life movement has been energized and effective. The death penalty in the U.S. is mostly decided in state legislatures where it's a frequent topic, and the Death Penalty Information Center has a run-down of both the positive and negative. Euthanasia is where there has been the greatest success, since it's currently illegal in most ways in most states. Between January 1994 and June 2009, while there were 113 legalization proposals in 24 states, none succeeded.

Participation – Small Group Meetings

Dorothy Day Catholic Worker House in Washington, DC on June 4 had James Kelly, who is on our Speakers List, speak at their monthly discussion. In addition to his talk, a Consistent Life sign-up sheet was passed around. Consistent Life literature (which can be downloaded and printed up from our web site), buttons and bumper stickers were available. Small group meetings of this kind are among the most effective ways of spreading the word, since they allow face-to-face interaction.

Delving Deeper – Online Radio

With the wonders of modern technology allowing radio shows on the web, we find several good shows where the consistent life ethic and related ideas are discussed in greater depth. We'll feature these occasionally in this newsletter. This week's is a one-hour radio interview exploring a thoughtful dialog between a pro-life and a pro-choice Quaker, air date 6/22/2008.

CL 13 baby

Quotation of the Week

Erma Clardy Craven, social worker

Abortion and Social Justice, Sheed & Ward, 1972

"It takes little imagination to see that the unborn Black baby is the real object of many abortionists. Except for the privilege of aborting herself, the Black woman and her family must fight for every other social and economic privilege. This move toward the free application of a non-right (abortion) for those whose real need is equal human rights and opportunities is benumbing the social conscience of America into unquestioningly accepting the 'smoke screen' of abortion. The quality of life for the poor, the Black and the oppressed will not be served by destroying their children."
