Peace & Life Connections #37 - November 26, 2010

 Thanksgiving Edition

 Let Us Give Thanks!

There are so many people in the world that are working hard to make compassion to everyone a reality.

Welcome Many New Subscribers

ad         We’ve had an upsurge in new subscribers this week. We had ads in Sojourners – that’s the graphic to the left – and in LifeNews. We also had tables at the Call to Action conference (staffed by Tony Masalonis and Mike Garcher) and at the Challenge of Communion (staffed by Tony).

This a good time to remind everyone: we do have all the back issues at www.consistent-life.org/weekly.html, and there’s an index there, renewed weekly, in case you want to look up a specific topic. We are delighted when people send in news items or quotations we can share; if you have these or any other comments or questions, the address is weekly@consistent-life.org. Note at the bottom below there is a way to forward any issue to a friend (or bunch of friends) who might be interested in subscribing, and when you use that “click here,” the message will include a way that they can sign up if they wish. If you're not on our snail mail list to receive our newsletters, and would like to be, send your contact information to info@consistent-life.org.

Another CL Endorser Gets Well-Earned Award

PLC 37 Buer         Brother David Buer, OFM, “the Friar to the homeless,” received the National Peace Award from the Secular Franciscan Order.  Brother Buer was a speaker at CL’s San Francisco Conference some years back.  He urges bringing the poor, the homeless, and the migrants into our circle of love.  He has established Poverello houses to serve the homeless in several cities and has set up cooling centers where homeless people can escape the oppressive summer heat of Arizona.   Paperback Version Making Progress

The 2008 hardcover version of Consistently Opposing Killing: From Abortion to Assisted Suicide, the Death Penalty, and War is best suited for libraries and is put out by a highfalutin publisher (Praeger). The price for U.S. customers has recently been cut in half, making this a good time to share it. It's also available as an e-book.

But we’ve needed a lower-priced paperback version for more casual readers and for our supporters to buy in bulk to distribute or make available to their constituencies. Preparations are all made, so this should be coming out shortly (stay tuned!). Here’s what the new front cover will look like. The sign is from the West Coast Walk for Life; the baby is 8 weeks gestational age and comes from Priests for Life, and the photo representing war was a memorial wall to women who disappeared during the Guatemalan civil war, taken in Guatemala City in 2009.

Quotation of the Week

Thomas Merton, 1968

The whole idea of compassion is based on a keen awareness of the interdependence of all these living beings, which are all part of one another, and all involved in one another.
