Peace & Life Connections #41 - January 7, 2011

Join us in DC for January Actions for Peace and Life

Consistent Life is participating in two events in Washington, DC in January, one focusing on peace and the other on life for the unborn. We invite you to join us for these actions, marching behind our banner and other activities. You don’t need to sign up in advance, but it would be nice to know if you're coming – email info@consistent-life.org or sign up at our Facebook events pages. For more details, see our January actions page.

Saturday, January 15 - Our member group Dorothy Day Catholic Worker initiated this full day of activities to mark 20 years of U.S. war on Iraq and call for peace. CL is a co-sponsor, along with a number of local and national peace groups. It includes a march, two vigils and a teach-in (where CL will have a few minutes).

Monday, January 24 - The annual March for Life – sponsors aren’t sympathetic to the consistent life ethic, but it’s a good place to get the message out and show our support. As in past years, we’ll assemble in front of the Sculpture Garden on Constitution Avenue NW near 7th Street between 11:30 and noon. New this year is a post-March gathering for informal fellowship at William Penn House, 515 East Capitol Street SE, four blocks from the end of the March at the Supreme Court. (They also offer inexpensive hostel-type lodging.)

Newsletter Now Out

Members of Consistent Life received in December the 8-page paper newsletter in the mail, but the color version is also available online. In addition to news on what Consistent Life is up to, it includes commentary from various people that attended the Life/Choice dialog conference at Princeton, an essay on the anniversary of the 1920 election when women first had the nation-wide vote in the United States, a piece about scholarship on God imagery related to opposing violence, plus reports on members' and member groups' new books and activities.

National Catholic Reporter Ad

National Catholic Reporter has a special pro-life issue for January 7, and CL put in a full-color ad. It’s on page 6a, next to an excellent article on the connection between abortion and bigotry against those unborn babies who have disabilities. We mention our YouTube channel, and the two books – Consistently Opposing Killing and Consistently Pro-Life: The Ethics of Bloodshed in Ancient Christianity. NCR will have a special peace-and-justice issue in August, and we have plans to advertise in that issue as well.

 Quotation of the Week

AllredEdward Allred, millionaire abortion doctor
San Diego Union, October 12, 1980

Another example of the connection of racism and poverty with abortion.

"When a sullen black woman of 17 or 18 can decide to have a baby and get welfare and food stamps and become a burden to us all, it's time to stop. In parts of South Los Angeles, having babies for welfare is the only industry the people have."

Dr. Allred's aversion to government subsidies did not prevent him from accepting millions in California tax dollars for his abortion practice.
