 Why Know About Ayn Rand?
A62 Rand       Paul Ryan, the architect of the current U.S. Republican budget plan, stated in 2005: "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand."
Ayn Rand believed that self-sacrificing altruism is evil, and wrote a 1964 book entitled The Virtue of Selfishness. She supported abortion for the normal reasons and in line with her explicit admiration for selfishness. She sees a need to protect the financially successful from having the fruits of their superiority re-distributed to “looters and moochers.” So tax cuts for the rich accompanied by severe cuts to social programs for the “losers” are presented as the moral thing to do.
This is the reason the April 10, 2011 issue of Newsweek
referred to Ryan’s budget and his reliance on Rand as a
War on the Weak.”

New YouTube Video
Nick Neal has posted a video called “Consistent Life Ethic Mash Up”  He explains: “This is a video Mash Up I made for my production class (I'm a cinema major) and when I first pitched to my Teaching Assistant I was warned that the professor might not like it because of her pro-choice views. However the professor loved it, because the pro-life message was wrapped in an anti-war message.” Nick shows the reasoning about consistency on war and abortion going both directions. (Warning: it does contain graphic images)

Quotation of the Week
Don Sloan, abortion doctor
From his book Choice: a Doctor's Experience with the Abortion Dilemma (second edition, 2002), p. 84
"Is abortion murder? All killing isn't murder.  A cop shoots a teenager who 'appeared to be going for a gun,' and we call it justifiable homicide – a tragedy for all concerned, but not murder . . . And then there's war. In theory, soldiers shoot only at each other. But in practice, lots and lots of other folks get killed.
We drop bombs where there are non-combatants – women and children and old people – and when they die we call it not murder but 'collateral damage.' Our soldiers get killed by 'friendly fire' – often by people who aimed directly at them. Is that murder? All killing like that, to me, is morally wrong. But murder?
Calling abortion 'murder' doesn’t make it murder. We are hearing someone’s value judgment placed on what others do."
