Peace & Life Connections #202 March 21, 2014
CL Ad in The American Conservative
In the past, Consistent Life has advertised in periodicals such as The Progressive and The Nation to reach out to political progressives who care about protecting the unborn. We have now reached out to a new audience, political conservatives who care about pursuing peace, by placing an ad in the latest issue of The American Conservative. The issue featuring our ad will be available in print and online (for subscribers) throughout March and April. We continue our work to bring people of all political persuasions together in the defense of life.

Strength through Principles
While we make the argument that being consistent about applying the same non-killing principles across issues strengthens anti-violence arguments, an obvious corollary is that applying moral principles to one’s own group strengthens the case for asking others to apply them as well. The “weakness” of a U.S. response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine comes not from the U.S. failing to use military might, but from the U.S. failing to abide by the principles it asks others not to break. Stephen Zunes details this case in a recent article called “Straight Talk on Ukraine.” Stephen is co-editor of our book, Consistently Opposing Killing, and his web page is a good place to go for detailed information on current international policy.

Each One Reach One
Are all your consistent lifer friends and family subscribing to Peace & Life Connections? You can forward to them any issues they might find of particular interest. The ideal way to forward is with the button down at the bottom in every issue, because that will give them a link to opt-in if they wish. They can also peruse past issues (and we even have an index) at www.consistent-life/weekly.html.

Reminder: Life/Justice/Peace Conference near Philadelphia – March 29
Quotation of the Week Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador
Note: March 24 is the anniversary of Romero's 1980 assassination by right-wing death squads due to his advocacy for the poor and social justice.
It moves one’s heart to think: Nine months before I was born there was a woman who loved me deeply. She did not know what I was going to be like, but she loved me because she carried me in her womb. And when she gave me birth, she took me in her arms, because her love was not just beginning – she conceived it along with me. A mother loves – and that is why abortion is so abhorrent.
