Peace & Life Connections #299 February 26, 2016
Weekly E-Newsletter of Consistent Life
Progress Against Nuclear Weapons and Abortion
Consistent Life was founded by its predecessor organization, Prolifers for Survival (PS). PS started when the nuclear arms race was a major issue (“for survival” meant Earth’s survival). Our member group Friends Witness for a Prolife Peace Testimony (Friends means Quakers) offers reflections on connections between abortion and nuclear weapons. Our specialty is looking at connections this way, but since this is a newsletter, we’ll cover recent news on progress:
∞ From February 22-26, the United Nations had a Working Group on nuclear disarmament in Geneva working on a treaty to ban nuclear weapons. Countries without such weapons are naturally eager to see such a treaty, but countries that possess them are not attending. Yet the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons argues a treaty represents progress, since adoption of such a treaty will help give nuclear weapons possession the stigma it deserves.
∞ An abortion-sympathetic Bloomberg Report on February 24 documents how in the U.S. “Abortion Clinics Are Closing at a Record Pace.”

Pope Francis Asks Catholic Leaders for No Executions during “Year of Mercy”
The pope got quite a bit of press coverage for a February 21 speech asking government leaders who are Catholic to hold no executions during his proclaimed “Year of Mercy,” which runs through November 20. He said: "I appeal to the conscience of those who govern so that international consensus is reached for the abolishment of the death penalty. And I propose to all those among them who are Catholic to make a courageous and exemplary gesture: may no execution sentence be carried out in this Holy Year of Mercy."

CL Blogs
Since our blog began last June, we’ve covered a wide range of topics. The consistent-life community is full of creative people with different thoughts to share, so we encourage you to submit your write-ups for our blog posts on aspects of the consistent life ethic. We’re interested in reflections on different angles on news and politics and history, book reviews, and personal stories. Blogs tend to be around 800 words, but as low as 300 or as high as 1,500 are fine if needed. Send to weekly@consistent-life.org.
Quotation of the Week Conor Beck Abortion Advocates Complain More Babies Were Born When Texas Defunded Planned Parenthood February 4, 2016
Intelligent people of various viewpoints can thoughtfully debate how best to prevent unplanned pregnancies and provide health care. But when the main argument against a changed law is that more poor people will be born, it darkens the pro-abortion position.
