In the News – Death Penalty for a Class B Misdemeanor

CL 8 canal

In a story called “The All-American Canal,” the newsmagazine 60 Minutes last Sunday covered the shocking death toll – hundreds of people drowned – when the desperately poor risk their lives in a bid to escape poverty by coming to the United States for work. This is a prime case of how poverty and racism lead directly to the death of their victims. Officials not only refused to take the simple measure of providing safety features like ladders and buoys, but actually took them down when a concerned citizen put some up. The story provides a case study of how dehumanizing language is used to defend the indefensible, as it has for children in the womb and others who are treated as disposable criminals for being in a spot that more powerful people don’t want them to be.

Lives of Consistency – Daniel Berrigan

Daniel BerriganLong-time CL supporter Daniel Berrigan is turning 89 on May 9. From an article by National Catholic Reporter for the occasion: “Dan's contemplative rhythm of listening and going public puts him in the tradition of the towering prophets . . . who notwithstanding the vast distance in time, have become Dan's mentors and models. Like them, he denounces war, weapons, arms races, corrupt regimes, miscarriages of justice, assaults on human rights, and threats to widows and orphans, the unborn and prisoners. What makes Dan's critique so unique, according to one of his biographers, Francine du Plessix Gray, is his ‘startling’ use of language. Even his opponents sit up and take note.”

Quotation of the Week
Mary Meehan
"Abortion: The Left Has Betrayed the Sanctity of Life: Consistency Demands Concern for the Unborn"
The Progressive, September, 1980

"Some of us who went through the anti-war struggles of the 1960s and early 1970s are now active in the right-to-life movement . . . We are moved by what pro-life feminists call the "consistency thing" – the belief that respect for human life demands opposition to abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, and war. We don't think we have either the luxury or the right to choose some types of killing and say that they are all right, while others are not. A human life is a human life; and if equality means anything, it means that society may not value some human lives over others."
