Peace & Life Connections #204 April 4, 2014
Life/Peace/Justice Conference
Attendance was around 150 people at the highly successful Life/Peace/Justice conference held at Villanova University near Philadelphia last Saturday, March 29. This shows that regional conferences are an excellent way to build the consistent-life community, so we’d like to encourage our supporters to think in terms of one-day regional conferences for their own areas (contact weekly@consistent-life.org). No Holes in the Arguments
In “The Pro-Life Execution Problem,” posted March 27, William Saletan documents an inconsistency in U.S. states which insist on information being made public involving abortion but then legislate for secrecy for the pharmacies providing drugs for executions. As usual, the case against one kind of killing is weakened if the principles involved in opposing it aren’t applied across the board. As he starts the piece, “The debate over concealment of state-sanctioned killing has moved on to another ‘pro-life’ state.” Our vision is to move the movements so that there would be no justification for putting the “pro-life” in quotation marks as a way of indicating skepticism.

Quotation of the Week Jimmy Carter (U.S. President 1977-1981) Just released book: A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power (Simon & Schuster Inc., N.Y, pp. 3-4).
We are guided by international agreements as well as our own moral values, most often derived from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Bible, the Koran, and other cherished texts that proclaim a commitment to justice and mercy, equality of treatment between men and women, and a duty to alleviate suffering. However, some selected scriptures are interpreted, almost exclusively by powerful male leaders within the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and other faiths, to proclaim the lower status of women and girls. This claim that women are inferior before God spreads to the secular world to justify gross and sustained acts of discrimination and violence against them. This includes unpunished rape and other sexual abuse, infanticide of newborn girls and abortion of female fetuses, a worldwide trafficking in women and girls, and so-called honor killings of innocent women who are raped
