We Don’t Acquiesce to Un-Invitations

CL member group Feminists For Nonviolent Choices posts this about a May 26 event in Rochester, New York:

Although we were uninvited from the Rochester Peace Parade due to our stance against abortion, we were glad to have the opportunity to stand for peace and justice for all by filing our own permit. We walked behind the parade and often heard, "We don't agree with you, but we are so glad you are here."

A Marvelous Life Story from Maya Angelou

Since author, poet, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou passed away May 28, CL member group Feminists for Life has posted an article from Family Circle Magazine; October 8, 2001, about Maya’s experience in becoming pregnant at age 16 in the mid-1940s. As she tells the tale, once she realized she was pregnant : ”I was scared to pieces. Back then, if you had money, there were some girls who got abortions, but I couldn’t deal with that idea. Oh, no. No. I knew there was somebody inside me. So I decided to keep the baby.” It was a boy and a joy.

Thanks to Ken Maher

CL member group Feminists For Nonviolent Choices is a pro-life, pro-woman organization that seeks to open minds to its philosophy of pro-life feminism, the belief that all people, by virtue of their human dignity, have a right to live without violence from conception to natural death. They announce:
“At our annual member meeting on Monday, May 19th, we were excited to announce this year's recipient of the Mary Dwelley Voice for Life Award: Kenneth Maher.
“Ken is a man who truly sees every human being as having infinite value.  He is unwaveringly consistent in his work to protect all life and is a true consensus builder and peacemaker.
“Ken is a founding member of the Seamless Garment Network (now Consistent Life), was instrumental in founding Common Ground of Western New York, and has been with Feminists for Nonviolent Choices since our beginning in 1990.  He is always there with thoughtful, solid advice, with a helping hand, a comforting presence, and as one of our biggest cheerleaders.
“It was an honor to even briefly acknowledge his many years and many energies of diligence to human dignity.  We cannot thank him enough.”

Quotation of the Week
"A New Ethic for Medicine and Society," California Medicine 113. September, 1970. p. 68.

Note: despite its wording, the editorial is actually in favor of abortion legalization, the “new ethic,” so is another case of abortion advocacy admitting the pro-life case.

The reverence for each and every human life has also been a keystone of Western medicine and is the ethic which has caused physicians to try to preserve . . . every human life which comes under their surveillance. This traditional ethic is still clearly dominant, but there is much to suggest that it is being eroded at its core and may eventually even be abandoned. . . . Since the old ethic has not yet been fully displaced it has been necessary to separate the idea of abortion from the idea of killing, which continues to be socially abhorrent. The result has been a curious avoidance of the scientific fact, which everyone really knows, that human life begins at conception and is continuous whether intra- or extra-uterine until death. The very considerable semantic gymnastics which are required to rationalize abortion as anything but taking a human life would be ludicrous if they were not often put forth under socially impeccable auspices.
