Immigrant Children
Ethika Politica has an interesting article relating opposition to abortion and help for the flood of immigrant children as connected issues, pointing out how the right-wing/left-wing positions lead to inconsistency in the underlying principles.
Meanwhile, religious leaders, especially Catholic and Evangelical ones, are aghast at protesters shouting for these children to go home. Cardinal Dolan of New York wrote of one such incident, “It was un-American; it was unbiblical; it was inhumane.” CL Endorser Sam Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, said, “I remember when my fellow evangelicals said, ‘Deport them all, they’re here illegally, end of story,’ but the leadership now supports immigration reform. There’s still angst in the pews, but if they listen more to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John than to Rush Limbaugh, they’ll act with compassion towards these children.”
 Fox News screen capture
Conservative columnist George Will caused a stir when commenting on Fox News Sunday, August 10: “We ought to say to these children, ‘Welcome to America. You’re going to go to school, get a job, and become Americans. We have 3,141 counties in this country. That would be 20 per county. The idea that we can’t assimilate these eight-year-old criminals with their teddy bears is preposterous.”
He then points out that conditions in their home countries need to be improved, and while his conservative solutions may not be ones everyone would agree with, it’s obvious that the ethical way of stemming the tide of immigrant children involves helping to solve the problems from which they are understandably fleeing.
Peace Games
The Peace & Development Collaborative Network is sponsoring a competition: “Developers, technologists and peacebuilders around the world are invited to submit digital games & gamified apps facilitating dialogue, preventing violence.”
Profits and People
Issues of violence commonly have a connection of proponents who put profits before people, but Planned Parenthood has made this explicit. Here is a photograph of a document that says, “This Certificate Awarded to Aurora [clinic] For Exceeding Abortion Visits, First Half of FY12 Compared to First Half of FY13.”

Quotation of the Week
Andrew Klager, with CL member group Orthodox Peace Fellowship
If an attempt at nonviolent conflict resolution isn't as immediately successful as we had hoped, we say, "See, nonviolence doesn't work." But when military intervention doesn't work or makes things worse, we say, "Well, at least we tried something," and leave it at that, fully satisfied with our course of action and confident enough to try it again in the future. Why isn't this the other way around?
