Movie on Nonviolent and Caring Alternatives

193 Shelter

On the Secular Prolife Blog, Rebecca Downs discusses a Hollywood movie due out January 24 called “Gimme Shelter.” In this movie, based on a true story, a pregnant teenager with a horrifying family life finds community and compassion in a crisis pregnancy center shelter. Such gritty struggles make for good drama; nonviolent overcoming of real-world problems makes better literature than the fantasy of violence.

Abortion and Intimate-Partner Violence

A meta-analysis is a study of studies - scientists pool several studies together to come to conclusions. Such a paper was published this week in PLOS Medicine: “Associations Between Intimate Partner Violence and Termination of Pregnancy” by Megan Hall and colleagues in London. The association is definite and complex. One conclusion was that women seeking abortions did welcome the opportunity to disclose the violence they were subjected to and were receptive to getting help. This shows the need for screening and intervening, which in some cases may alleviate the desperation that drives an abused woman to abortion. But even if she still gets the abortion, getting her out of the situation she’s trapped in can prevent future abortions. And of course has merits in itself as a crucial violence-prevention strategy. (See summary here).

Quotation of the Week
Pope Francis, January 13, 2014

Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food or disposable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as if they were unnecessary. It is horrifying just to think that there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day; children being used as soldiers, abused and killed in armed conflicts; children turned into merchandise in that terrible form of modern slavery called human trafficking, which is a crime against humanity.
